Job Description

LOCATION: Ports of Aberdeen (North & South Harbours)

HOURS PER WEEK:     Monday-Friday (occasional weekend work required) 8-12 hour shifts

TERM: 6-month contract

Salary: £20 PH

The Company

Thames Marine Services are a fuel and lubricant provider to vessels on the River Thames. Our office is based in the Shad Thames area where business is conducted, overseen and communicated with the crew on the river

Job Role

We’re looking for a capable, safety-driven Captain to take command of our oil barge operations across the Ports of Aberdeen (North & South Harbour). This role suits someone who understands the responsibility of moving oil cargo in a busy commercial port environment and who can lead a crew with confidence and discipline.

Your main duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Take full command of the oil barge and ensure safe navigation at all
  • Oversee loading, transit, and discharge of oil cargo in line with regulatory and company standards
  • Lead and mentor crew, ensuring strong safety culture and operational discipline
  • Maintain vessel documentation, logs, and compliance records
  • Liaise with terminals, port authorities, and company operations teams
  • Ensure all operations meet with environmental, safety, and industry regulations

Qualification and Training

Essential

  • BML Tier 1 Level 2 (Boatmasters’ Licence) with Oil Cargo Endorsement
  • A valid ML5 Medical or ENG 1
  • Valid STWC certificates (including all mandatory safety training)

Proven experience as a captain or senior officer on oil barges or similar vessels

Knowledge, Understanding and experience

  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills
  • Good organisational skills
  • Working knowledge of MS Word/Excel
  • Understanding of Merchant Shipping Regulations 2018
